The ever-green allspice tree grows to about 10 meters tall and thrives in the tropical forests of South Africa and the West Indies. The tree can bear fruit for up to 100 years.

The fruits lose their spicy aroma as they ripen, so they are harvested while still green and unripe and then dried in the sun.

Allspice has a unique flavor, combining notes of pepper, clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and is therefore referred to as "allspice" in several languages, including English.

Ground allspice is great for meatballs, pickled herring, and pâté.
